If you want to go where the locals go to buy fresh produce, head to the bustling Badung Market in Denpasar. Everything from fruit and vegetables to meat, fish, and spices is sold here, not forgetting the all important daily offerings (canang) that you see everywhere in Bali.
There are few tourists and many of the local vendors don't speak English, although you may be approached by a "guide" to show you around. There's no need for one however, and you can easily make your way around on your own. The market is busiest first thing in the morning, when produce is at its freshest.
A trip to Pasar Badung can easily be combined with a visit to Kumbasari Market just across the river.

As local as it gets!

A trip to the local market in Denpasar is a must for those looking for an authentic, non-touristy experience. Be prepared for some strange sights and smells (the meat section is not for the squeamish), but an overall very interesting way to spend the morning.
